NZ GST Inclusive vs Exclusive Calculator
Convert a New Zealand price between GST-exclusive and GST-inclusive amounts using the current 15% GST rate.
Choose a conversion
Formulas
Add GST: exclusive x 1.15. Remove GST: inclusive / 1.15. GST component from an inclusive amount: inclusive x 3 / 23.
Example
NZ$230 including GST becomes NZ$200 exclusive plus NZ$30 GST.
Worked example: quoting a job both ways
An electrician in Invercargill quotes a rewiring job at $4,600 excluding GST. Adding 15% gives GST of $690 and a GST-inclusive total of $5,290, which is the figure the homeowner sees on the quote.
Later she checks a supplier’s shelf price of $5,290 including GST for the same materials. Removing GST: $5,290 / 1.15 = $4,600.00 exclusive, with GST of $5,290 x 3/23 = $690.00. Both directions line up, so the quote and the supplier price are consistent.
Using the converter day to day
New Zealand shops must show GST-inclusive prices to consumers, so extraction matters at the checkout and in your bookkeeping. Business-to-business quotes can go either way, but whichever you choose, label it clearly:
- Converting exclusive to inclusive when you prepare a quote or invoice for a customer.
- Converting inclusive to exclusive when you enter a purchase into your accounts or check a supplier invoice.
- Always writing “+ GST” or “incl GST” next to the figure so no one has to guess.
Quick conversions to remember
$100 exclusive becomes $115 inclusive ($15 GST). $200 exclusive becomes $230 inclusive ($30 GST). $1,000 exclusive becomes $1,150 inclusive ($150 GST). Going the other way, $115 inclusive becomes $100 exclusive ($15 GST), and $575 inclusive becomes $500 exclusive ($75 GST).
NZ GST inclusive vs exclusive calculator FAQs
What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive?
GST-exclusive is the price before GST is added. GST-inclusive is the final price with 15% GST already in it. A $200 exclusive price and a $230 inclusive price are the same sale.
When must I show GST-inclusive prices?
Prices shown to consumers in New Zealand must include GST. Business-to-business prices can be shown either way as long as the basis is clear.
How do I convert between the two?
To add GST, multiply the exclusive price by 1.15. To remove GST, divide the inclusive price by 1.15, or multiply it by 3/23 to get the GST component directly.
Can I use this for zero-rated or exempt sales?
No. The conversion assumes the standard 15% rate. It does not determine whether a sale is taxable, zero-rated or exempt.
