NZ GST Adjustment Calculator

NZ GST Adjustment Calculator

Use this simple calculator to estimate a GST adjustment where the amount of GST attributable to taxable use changes. It is an educational calculator, not a replacement for the IRD adjustment rules.

Estimate a change-in-use adjustment

Formula

For a permanent change in use, IRD describes a wash-up calculation as: full GST amount x new percentage minus actual deduction.

Example

If full GST is NZ$3,000, the original taxable-use deduction was 60% and the new taxable use is 80%, the simple change is NZ$600. Specific adjustment rules, thresholds and limits still need to be checked.

Important NZ rules

IRD says some changes do not require an adjustment, including certain cases where the GST-exclusive cost is NZ$10,000 or less or the adjustment/change falls within specified thresholds. Adjustment periods also depend on the cost of the asset.

Worked example: a laptop used more for business

Sarah bought a laptop for $3,450 including GST for her graphic design business in Tauranga. The GST component was $450, and at the time she used the laptop 60% for business, so she claimed $270 of GST.

A year later she works from home more and her business use has risen to 80%. She is now entitled to $360 of the GST, so she makes an adjustment of $90 in her next return. The calculator above does this same sum: full GST amount multiplied by the new percentage, minus the GST already claimed.

A practical approach to change-in-use adjustments

Adjustments are usually worked out at the end of each adjustment period, not every time your usage shifts a little. In practice:

  • Record the taxable-use percentage you claimed when you bought the asset.
  • Review it at each balance date or adjustment period end.
  • Run the wash-up only when the change is big enough to require an adjustment. Small changes and low-cost assets often fall within IRD’s thresholds.
  • Keep the working papers with the GST return they relate to.

NZ GST adjustment calculator FAQs

What is a change-in-use adjustment?
It is a wash-up for GST you already claimed. If an asset’s business (taxable) use rises, you may be able to claim more GST. If it falls, you may have to pay some back.

When do I have to make one?
Generally at the end of each adjustment period, which depends on the asset’s cost. Check the IRD page linked below for the current periods and thresholds.

What if the change is tiny?
IRD says some changes do not require an adjustment, including certain cases where the GST-exclusive cost is $10,000 or less. The calculator helps you see the size of the change before you decide.

Can the adjustment go either way?
Yes. A positive result means your taxable-use share rose and you can claim extra GST. A negative result means it fell and you owe the difference back.
