Use this Australian GST registration checker to compare your GST turnover with the standard A$75,000 threshold. It screens your figure only; it does not decide registration for special circumstances.

Australia GST Registration Checker

Australian GST registration threshold

The standard Australian GST turnover threshold is A$75,000. For not-for-profit organisations, the threshold is generally A$150,000. Certain activities, including taxi and ride-sourcing services, have special registration rules. The Australian GST registration guide covers what happens after you cross the line.

What this checker does

  • Compares entered GST turnover with the standard threshold.
  • Separates the standard business threshold from the not-for-profit threshold.
  • Flags that special registration rules can apply.

Worked example: a charity and a sole trader

A Canberra charity runs a fundraising shop with GST turnover of $140,000 for the year. As a not-for-profit, its threshold is $150,000, so it sits below the line and registration stays optional. The next year its turnover grows to $160,000, crossing the threshold, so it must register within 21 days. Meanwhile, a sole trader photographer with $80,000 of turnover crosses the $75,000 business threshold and must register too. Try both figures in the checker above: enter 140000 with “Not-for-profit organisation” selected, then 80000 as a business, and compare the two results.

Important limitation

GST turnover is not the same as profit, and it is not simply every dollar you receive. The ATO rules contain inclusions and exclusions. Use the official ATO guidance for a registration decision.

Practical tips when you cross the threshold

Register through the Australian Business Register or your tax agent within 21 days of becoming aware you will exceed the threshold. Choose your GST accounting method before your first BAS period starts; the GST accounting method checker explains the choice. Start charging GST from your registration date and keep every receipt so you can claim credits. If you register late, you can backdate the registration and may owe GST on sales made since the date you should have registered.
